Lok Sabha 2014 Tamil Nadu

My previous posts talked about my disclaimer and a general history of Tamil Nadu politics. In today's post we will see about Tamil Nadu's South Chennai constituency. The reason to choose this is this is my home and also it is one of the populated constituency in chennai with various types of population. This includes IT personnel, middle class workers, daily wage earners and some of the old kings of Mylapore.

South Chennai Lok Sabha Constituency consists of following 6 state assembly constituency.

  1. Velacherry (Newly created, First Lok sabha Election)
  2. T Nagar
  3. Saidapet
  4. Mylapore
  5. Virugambakkam(Newly Created, First Lok Sabha Election)
  6. Sholinganallur (Newly Created, First Lok Sabha Election)
of these the 3 old dogs saidapet ceded some to velacherry and T nagar gave some way for virugambakkam. Sholinganallur was formed after chennai was extended.

Now let us see who are all contenting in this seat and little background of them. we will also see some of the lingering problem as i see because I have been living in this place for past 15 years and my uncle for past 25 years. Together we have see the changes in especially in velacherry area when it was a paddy field to todays town center.

Important issues in South Chennai

T. Nagar and Saidapet
  1. There is huge problem with respect to Traffic (Understand that this is a state subject) and place congestion. Central Government should provide guidelines on zoning and enforcing zoning rules.
  2. Mambalam railway station needs to decongested and this can be done by having express trains make an additional stop at St. Thomas Mount station so people going to west chennai will alight here instead of Mambalam or Egmore
  3. State Govt is building lot of bridges but the MP should take up issues like Rail Over Bridge near T nagar bus stand and Duraiswamy subway near Panagal Park. Those are the only 2 options available for residents of Mambalam to connect to T Nagar which is causing traffic snarls.

Velacherry and Shollinganallur

  1. There is unprecedented growth in these 2 areas and also unplanned. Recently they opened a new mall in velacherry road without adequate parking. The mall was allowed to operate before the parking was completed. MP should bring it up in the parliament to make Parking mandatory for all commercial buildings. This is an valid problem across the entire nation.
  2. Velachery Lake has dwindled in size. When I used to visit my uncle the lake was so massive and that was one of the deciding factor for us to move to Velachery from Trichy. There is rampant encroachment of the lake. Further, the lakes storm water drain is completely occupied and blocked. This needs to be addressed because this is the cause for water stagnation and flooding during monsoon
  3. pallikaranai marsh used to be the drain for velachery lake which is also in the bad shape. Center and state should work together to get the marsh restored and make be convert it to a ecopark and a birds sanctuary.
  4. Railways should consider a feasibility study for extending MRTS from velachery to pallavaram along the radial road. This would help in multiple ways
    1. Decongest Guindy and st thomas mount station.
    2. Easy access to airport for people and IT professionals flying out and flying into chennai
    3. Help people from the dacoits harassing and extortion by call taxi and auto, especially call taxi which is run by Karthi Chidambaram (correct the Finance Minister) who is also contesting from Karaikudi

Mylapore

This is the old and original Madras and because of that there was enough planning but there are lot of improvements that can be done here too.

  1. Infrastructure needs to be improved to attract tourists and add mylapore to tourists map. Important attractions here are

    1. Madras Day
    2. Aruvathu Moovar festival
    3. Kapaleshwarar temple car festival
    4. Old Madras
  2. The buckingham canal should be restored and inland waterways should be developed which once existed.
  3. MRTS access roads should be improved and the station amenities should be improved along with security. Also the huge station complex should be made into a fully monitored surveillance parking lot so people can utilize it and safely travel. This generates money to railways and prevents the place from being used by anti social elements.
  4. Fort Shore estate slum should be rehabilitated to improve access to Marina beach and beach restoration should be tasked
  5. Work with state govt to provide feeder buses to MRTS facilities.
  6. MRTS should be extended from Thiruvanmiyur to Shollinganallur to reduce congestion and take cars off the road and reduce global warming.
  7. Adyar river estuary should be desilted and restored. This needs in 2 places
    1. near MRC nagar
    2. Near Sathya studio

Finally some improvements as whole to entire chennai

Coovum river restoration should be taken up in war footing
Chennai central business district needs to developed to prevent companies gobbling up agriculture land.
Parrys Corner, Nungabakkam and velachery should be developed into CBDs with skyscrapers and companies should be asked to house their operations there instead of going out to wods and destroying agricultural land.
Parry corner should be developed into a financial power similar to New York and Singapore and Nungabakkam should be developed into a fashion capital of east and velachery as business capital.

Now my choice

I am in favour of BJP wherever BJP’s own candidate is fielded and I am not willing to vote for Vijayakanth or other party in NDA in Tamil Nadu besides Anbu Mani ramadoss (because of his tireless effort on banning smoking and drinking) and Vaiko for his fight for justice to everyone. Vijayakanth is a hypocrite and I was personally affected by him. His college bus hit our car from behind and the driver abused us for not violating the signal and refusing to come to police station. This happened in front of Chrompet police station and My Aunt was severely injured because our back windshield in the car shattered and she was hospitalized. Because of the college students in the bus who sat out to protest in favour of us and was ready to sacrifice the college if the driver was not held in the police station.

So I am not going to to favour vijayakanth at any cost and moreover he is not a fit person who had double standards taking about family politics and bringing in his wife and making his Brother in Law a candidate from salem.

In south chennai I will vote for BJP’s L Ganesan because he is a good person and lives in the constituency. Further, he is interested in the development as I have attended his meeting when he was BJP president of Tamil Nadu. Important reason is I want BJP to form govt if possible as single largest party or get support from few one such example would be is from AIADMK from tamil nadu instead of Vijaykanth who is a double face.

Lok Sabha 2014- Tamil Nadu

I am from the great state of Tamil Nadu and as mentioned earlier I am going to start my blog on election 2014 from Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu is the southern most state in the Indian union. Tamil Nadu is one of the leading industrial state in India. The capital of the state is Chennai which is the one the 4 Major metro cities.

The state has 39 Lok Sabha Seats. Since 1964 the state is primarily administered by the dravidian parties like DMK and AIADMK. After the defeat of the best chief minister the who country has ever given (including Mr Modi) Kamaraj congress party never able to regain its power.

Taking Ant-Hindi movement DMK headed by C.N Annaduari came to power. During the time of Anna the DMK govt was doing fine but then after the death came Mr Karunanidhi and MGR.

A difference of opinion between Kalaingar and MGR became a mainstream issue which led to the formation of AIADMK. MGR lead AIADMK and ruled for 10 full years. Since then it is the people of Tamil Nadu was alternated by  DMK and ADMK. Congress has lost it touch for variety of reason one such reason is Dynastic politics which led to Factions. Some example are Moopanar and his son GK vasan, Chindambaram and his family including Karthi Chindambaram, Kumari Anathan and his family H vasanthakumar, EVKS Elangovan etc. This does not end so would be difficult to trace all roots.

I have not mentioned anything about BJP because all these years BJP is nearly unknown in Tamil Nadu and could not establish a base at all. I am not confident if they could exploit Modi's wave because they did not leverage Atal Ji's wave either.

Intersting thing during this election is some new parties like DMDK(which i loathe), PMK, IJK etc.The reason why i hate DMDK is

  1. I do not want another cinema personality looking to leverage his popularity and rule and loot Tamil Nadu
  2. DMDK leader Vijayakanth talks a whole lot about dynastic politics and family politics but he always accompanied by his wife and she is the main person pulling strings in the party. This is double standard and was clearly evident when he lobbied for Sudeesh (Brother in Law ) for Rajaya sabha seat and now he is fielded from Salem
  3. After watching some of his press conference I am convinced that he is unfit to be in politics and when Panruti Ramachandran resigned from DMDK this validates all assumptions. I say this because Panruti Ramachandran was a strong leader during MGR period and was founding member of DMDK.

MDMK which is led by Vaiko who broke away from DMK is one of the other leader i like because he always stood for issues relating to Tamil Nadu. PMK is also an OK party because they are one who is favoring prohibition in Tamil Nadu. I am not sure it is possible atleast if they could get people to be ID ed for alcohol i would consider a victory.

Now with all these information I hope you have enough information about different parties present in Tamil Nadu. In the next post let's look at the alliance and which party contest in which constituency.

Stop Rash Driving

Driving has become rampant in last decade in the city of Madras and for that matter the entire country. But in here I am penning what I see on the road daily. We all travel atleast 10 kms daily to work (each way). We feel that driving is our Birth Right but in reality driving is a privilage and should never be misused. We all complain about traffic congestion in the city but no one wants to find solution for this. I was reading a research study recently and I was surprised about the finding in the article. It is estimated that there are 16.5 million people in the City of Los Angeles. The city has roads built around the city as Freeways and High ways for ease of travel, but still there is traffic congestion in the city during peak hours. The main reason that was quoted in the study was lack of public transport.

I couldn't complete the blog and even before that we have 2 major accidents in chennai city in a row.

1. Minister's son died

2. Bus Over turned on Gemini Bridge.

It is so unfortunate that these days it is a nightmare to be on the Chennai City roads. I don't think I have to complete the blog as actions speak more than words. Take a look at yourself

Please fiends who drive daily think again and always remember to share the road with other person. It is not our "Right to Drive but it is a Privilege".

Boycott TASMAC near Schools, Place of Worship and public places

Dear Friends,

Month of June is here, this is beginning of school season and many schools will be starting the academic year pretty soon. We all want our kids to have better education and want them to become a better citizens, but we forget one thing the society plays a critical role in the development of a child. Our child's growth and future depends on the ambiance and surroundings that we provide for them to grow.

TASMAC is the state run wine shops in our great state of Tamil Nadu. With growing sales at TASMAC in recent past the shops have mushroomed uncontrolled in all places with out any care. As a good citizen and want our kids to have better tomorrow we should take a oath to stop buying drinks from those TASMAC shops that are close to any schools, any places of worship and any places places like railway station, bus stand, parks etc.

Why do I say this?

These are the places our kids regularly use and if they see all these men drinking they naturally get intrigued to find more about it especially in teen age. We as responsible Madras vasi should not give this opportunity for our kids. I cannot say not to drink because that is individual preference and I am no authority to ask somebody not to drink, but as a friend I request you to avoid buying drinks from TASMAC shops that are close to these places so that sales go down and the shops close them selves.

This could be the first step that we can take to completely remove alcohol from our society. If you want to physically see the abuse caused in person please try to visit Guindy Station on race course and you can experience the problem first hand. I am not sure Govt is going to take action because it is a nice source of income for them to fill up the coffers. So we need to stand united in curbing this abuse.

Let me know your thoughts

Honking Ban

Honking in traffic is a biggest pollution in Chennai City and for that matter the entire country. Govt of Tamil Nadu and Chennai Corporation should pass a law that bans Honking while driving unless it is emergency. Repeated Honkers should be penalized by revoking their driving license. If you try to travel in Mount Road in the morning rush hour you could only hear horns piped from all kind of vehicles. some call taxis and cabs even have high decibel horns which causes hyper tension to fellow travelers.

Noise Pollution study conducted by IIT Madras can be found here

As a citizen of the Great State of Tamil Nadu, we can be part of a solution for this problem. We need to create a better place for our children and grand children to enjoy and live in similar to the way our fore fathers gave us. I am listing out some of the ways that I use in my daily routine to reduce noise pollution.

  1. Tune your motorcycle or car to low decibel
  2. Never honk in a traffic congestion
  3. Do not accelerate too rapidly which would require to apply breaks suddenly
  4. Drive at reduced speed in residential and hospital areas
  5. If not driving do not Jay walk.
  6. Use subways or foot over path to cross roads.
  7. Plan additional time for travel
  8. Give right of way for pedestrians and smaller vehicles.
These are some of things that i follow but please feel free to add any other things that we as a Madras Vasi can follow to reduce Noise pollution in Chennai.

We as the people of Chennai needs to understand that implications or Honking and noise pollution and start reducing the use slowly. As said is Bhagawat Gita "If you want to change be the change". We as the people will take a oath to reduce the noise pollution in Chennai city and make Chennai a better place to live in.

Ban Wall Posters

Chennai Corporation and Tamil Nadu Govt should pass a law banning Wall posters. It looks so awkward to have a poster on the public property and even in some private property. Rather than having posters Govt should encourage wall painting of Tamil Culture and History on the public walls and may be even consider giving property tax reduction for any private individual willing to have a piece of Tamil History and culture engraved on there walls.  This if done would reduce green house gases by bringing down paper consumption thereby increasing number of trees which otherwise would be cut down.

Lets think about this friends next time you want to stick poster think about the tree. We could also go further and boycott theaters that stick posters.

Tell me what you think.

I saw an article in the Hindu today.  I wanted to update it in the blog so I can share it with you all. Please look at how shabby the wall looks. Is it how we want to have our wall looking?
